Vaccine Conspiracies

It seems in the current climate that one of the most popular topics of discussion is the Coronavirus pandemic: indeed it is something that I have already written about in this blog before. It does seem to dominate the news and there never fails to be some new controversy about it, whether that be another celebrity breaking rules or your neighbour having numerous people over. But one of the main topics of controversy related to the pandemic stems from the conspiracies in regard to the vaccinations.

When it was announced that the development of a vaccine had been successful, I remember breathing a sigh of relief. There seemed to be some hope after almost a year of being in and out of lockdown, a small flicker of light at the end of the tunnel. However, like most things there is always someone or something that has to ruin a good thing and in this case it seems that these people are those who view the vaccine with suspicion. Most of these people are under the impression that underneath the hope in the vaccine there is something more sinister at play. There are always people who go against the grain or believe in some wild theory. For example many people seem to believe that the moon landings were faked. In addition there are already those who are opposed to any sort of vaccination for their children. However, the fact that there are people questioning this vaccine specifically for coronavirus baffles me the most.

The pandemic has affected almost everyone across the world to some extent, we have all not been able to live our lives the way we have been accustomed to. There have been numerous limits to our lives and to our economy, all of which have impacted us in a mostly negative way. So surely the development of a vaccine seems the best way that we can start to return to normal? Which is why it confuses me that people are setting out to dismantle to truth surrounding the vaccine, it discredits the hope that people have been holding onto as a result. It also appears to me that the majority of the people who are questioning the vaccine are also the ones who have been the most outspoken about lockdown rules and the pandemic as a whole. They appear to be the most outraged about restrictions so surely any opportunity for this to be over with they would get on board with? However, this has clearly not been the case.

One of the claims that appears to be circulating in regard to the vaccine is that governments would be using the mass vaccination to impose on people’s personal rights by implementing a micro-chip into their arm. Why? Well, apparently in order to track their citizens. Although this might be a worthy storyline for a science fiction or dystopian film it seems way too far-fetched for real life. It honestly baffles me that people believe that the government would do this, I don’t quite know what they expect the government to do with this information; I am unsure what advantage it would provide the government with. These people who believe this narrative are most likely those that are also under the impression that the government is hiding the true extent of the virus from the public or that the government are blowing matters up more in order to control us and to keep us inside. I really don’t think that this is the case, same as any other sane person. Surely the government wouldn’t have done all this in order to control us, not when it has had such a significantly detrimental affect on the economy. Similarly, the concept that the government would want to control us through micro-chips just seems ridiculous. There is no other way to describe it, I don’t even see why any justification is needed; there is no way of arguing with these people.

The fact that people are wary about the vaccine not only baffles me but it also angers me. It seems to me that the development of a vaccine is the best option, the only logical option. In most films about pandemics or indeed in scientific theory, when a vaccine breaks out globally the way it is eventually dealt with is through a vaccine. So it is evidently the only way we can return to normal and the fact that people want to threaten this for nonsensical reasons angers me the most. For them to prevent other people’s right to return to normal is selfish. Similarly, this ‘libertarian’ idea of the need for individual liberty in regard to choosing to take the vaccine doesn’t make any more sense to me than the conspiracies. If you claim something is an infringement on your individual liberty BUT you refusing it affects or threatens other people’s individual liberty, then it isn’t an infringement of YOUR personal liberty. Essentially these people who believe in this vaccine conspiracy are ultimately selfish and uncaring and need to take a serious look at the way their views affect other people.
